Hygge: The Art of Creating a Calm, Cozy Retreat

The Danish practice of Hygge (pronounced: HOO-ga) is defined as a feeling or moment that is cozy, charming or special and is especially popular during these dark, winter months. But how does it affect hardware retailers?

For the last few years, Hygge has been translated by interior designers into calm, cozy retreats created with soothing colors, soft fabrics, defined spaces and simple touches like candles and lamps.

Many homeowners and DIYers seek to create their own little piece of Hygge in their living spaces, and home improvement retailers can help. Try creating a small vignette in your store with items you sell (especially from your housewares department), such as candles or pillows near a comfortable chair and blanket.

Although the trend has received some competition from similar ideas that emphasis mindfulness, moderation and wellness, Hygge is still at the forefront of most designers and consumers’ minds and is on trend for 2019.
