Young Retailer of the Year Video Series: Jeremy Stine

In the July issue of Hardware Retailing, we introduced you to this year’s class of Young Retailers of the Year. All summer long in the Hardware Retailing eNewsletter, we’re sharing videos profiling each winner so you can get a glimpse of some of the industry’s rising stars.

The final retailer we’re featuring is Jeremy Stine, digital marketing and e-commerce manager for Stine Home + Yard, based in Lake Charles, La. After working for the National Lumber Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA), Stine returned to his family’s 12-store operation to help develop a stronger online presence. Since then, Stine integrated e-commerce functionality into the store’s website, built a customer email database with 40,000 addresses and created a thriving social media presence with more than 20,000 Facebook followers.

Tips for Maximizing Consumable Sales

Today’s consumers are motivated by convenience, so whether you decide offering personalize impulse items or go with more traditional items, you can anticipate some healthy returns.

Here are some tips to get the most return from the consumables you carry:

  • Keep an eye out for deals on soda, water, candy, nuts, gum and other impulse items at warehouse retailers.
  • Understand the legal requirements for selling consumables in your area. Some states require you have a permit to sell these edibles.
  • Investigate brands that people could get from local suppliers that will set you apart from the big time candy assortments. Big-box retailers like CVS, Walgreens, Home Depot and Lowe’s typically don’t cater to local flavors.
