Emergency Prep

Emergency prep is a growing category at the National Hardware Show (NHS). From fires and floods to extreme wind and cold, home improvement retailers play a vital role in providing many of the supplies needed before, during and after emergencies. In preparation for the 2020 storm season, retailers can look to FEMA for a comprehensive list of emergency supplies that can be used as the basis for a disaster prep niche or a full category, including:

  • Water: one gallon of water per person per day for drinking and sanitation
  • Food: at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered radio and extra batteries
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit including a three-day supply of prescription medications
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask or cotton t-shirt to help filter the air
  • Moist towelettes for sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Sturdy shoes and extra clothing and blankets
  • Three-day supply of pet food

Many of these items and more can be sourced at the NHS, scheduled for May 5-7, 2020 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
