Houzz Announces 2023 Winter Design Trends

Houzz, the online home renovation forum, announced its 2023 Winter Design Trends. From connecting to the outdoors, entertaining guests, hidden spaces and earthy color palettes, Houzz has compiled the four biggest trends of the winter season with data collected through searches on its website from the U.S., compared to the same timeframe in 2022.

Connecting to the Outdoors

Houzz says homeowners are looking to connect with the outdoors from the comfort of their homes all yearlong. Searches for “bedroom window seats” and “living room bay windows” grew nearly 360% and 134% respectively. A four-season room gives homeowners plenty of light through large windows.

Entertainment-Focused Gathering Spaces

Winter brings cold weather, making it the perfect time to hang out with family and friends in a common area during winter gatherings. Searches for “sectional with coffee table” rose over 4,600%, “family room with TV over fireplace” grew 339% and “living room with built-in entertainment” grew 253%. Searches for a “small home theater” grew 106%.

Secret or Hidden Spaces

With the rise of true crime and murder mystery movies and television shows, Houzz is seeing a new focus on cloaked additions to home interiors that combine whimsy with functionality. Homeowners are gravitating toward the inclusion of “trap doors” and “kitchens with hidden pantries,” with searches for those terms up 255% and 148%. Searches for “speakeasy home bar lounge” or “wine bar and cellar under the stairs” were 108% and over 105%, showing homeowners want to add a fun element of surprise. This trend extends to children’s spaces too, with searches for “kids’ reading nooks” up 60%.

Green Color Palettes

The new year brings new color palettes. Houzz is seeing interest in incorporating the color of renewal in various shades throughout the home. Searches for “light green kitchen cabinets,” “sage green walls,” “teal living room,” “dark green exterior,” “green bathroom tile” and “pewter green” have all increased compared with the same period in 2022.
