Get ready: Bolder, brighter kitchens are on their way to homes near you.
The modern farmhouse style has dominated kitchen design trends for several years, but that’s about to change. Simple white cabinets accented by gray marbled countertops and white backsplashes are the heart of that farmhouse look, but while the trend continues to be popular, changes are on the horizon for those seeking a warmer, richer style.
Many designers are showcasing black matte, subtle blues, grays and greens (referred to as moody colors), and bright reds and cobalt blues in their kitchens, either as the main focus in cabinets or as accents. Two-tone cabinets that combine a natural wood with one of the colors listed above are also beginning to push the traditional single-toned white cabinets out the door.
Colors not normally thought of as kitchen cabinetry options, like bright orange or yellow, are also breaking onto the scene. Not only are unusual colors being used, but they are also being combined for truly unique kitchens, such as in these highlighted by This Old House, where a fiery orange island is paired with blue-gray wall cabinets.
Many of these new colorful kitchens are highlighted by accents of copper, reclaimed wood, colorful appliances and mixed metals.
