NHPA’s History of Adaptation and Service

For more than 100 years, the North American Hardware and Paint Association (NHPA) has helped independent hardware stores, home centers and lumberyards become better businesses. The association’s mission has stayed the same and the organization has worked with retailers as they weathered wars and economic crises.

Publications have changed and–gasp! NPHA launched a website in the ’90s. But the association is still thriving and continually working to serve retailers better.

In fact, in 2020, it opened its membership to paint and decorating retailers and changed its name from the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) to NHPA to better reflect the diversity of independent operators it serves.
