Critique Sheet for Store Evaluations

“I’ll be brutally honest with you if you’ll be brutally honest with me” is what three retailers in California promised each other when they started visiting each other’s stores to offer feedback.

Those retailers started what they call the Pterodactyl Management Group, and they offer each other candid criticism of each other’s businesses in efforts to become better retailers. Other retailer groups meet to offer each other similar feedback.

The beneficial partnerships are described in the September issue of Hardware Retailing magazine and can be imitated.

To get you started in replicating the Pterodactyls’ peer critique model, the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) created a downloadable worksheet for store evaluations. The document offers bullet points for grading product categories and other aspects of a home improvement retail operation.
