Preventing Phantom Energy Loads

When an electronic device is plugged in but not being used, it still pulls power, which is known as a phantom load. An unseen problem in many households, phantom energy loads cost homeowners hundreds of dollars a year. Educate customers on this common, but often unrecognized problem, and stock a variety of power strips, the No. 1 way to prevent phantom loads.

The Monster Power Shield XL comes with an ultra slim plug to fit in tight spaces, a 6-foot power cord, four AC outlets, two USB-A ports and a rare Earth magnet to help the power strip firmly attach to various surfaces.

The GS603 Power Strip from CyberPower provides six grounded, standard spaced outlets, a 3-foot power cord, lighted on/off switch and a 15-Amp circuit breaker to prevent overloading.

Feit Electric’s Wi-Fi-enabled Smart Powerstrip has four outlets and four USB ports and allows the user to turn electrics on and off and set timers with the free Feit Electric smartphone app.

The wall-mounted PowerCurve3.4 from 360 Electrical comes with five rotating outlets to fit larger plugs, two front-facing USB outlets for easy access, auto-shut down and a 6-foot power cord.
