For nearly six decades, the Retailers’ Choice Awards program has been honoring the best, most creative and most innovative products on the show floor at the National Hardware Show (NHS). Sponsored by the North American Hardware and Paint Association (NHPA), the Retailers’ Choice Awards program has been an attendee favorite since the program started in 1966 and is celebrating its 58th year.
A panel of independent retailers browses the show floor looking for products they think would perform well in their operations. The judges meet together to share their nominations, and from these nominations, the top 30 or so products are chosen as Retailers’ Choice Awards winners.
The winning products are announced at an awards ceremony on the evening of the second day of NHS. New this year, the awards ceremony will take place on the beautiful, open-air terrace of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Winners receive a plaque recognizing their product’s distinction and the Retailers’ Choice Logo to use in all their advertising or promotions for the winning product. Each winning product will also be featured in a special Retailers’ Choice Awards product section in either the June 2024 issue of Hardware Retailing or Paint & Decorating Retailer as determined by NHPA editorial staff.
Dan Tratensek, NHPA COO and publisher, says NHPA purposefully asks retailers to choose the products rather than editorial staff because retailers can provide real-life input on what would work in their stores with their customers.
“Our livelihoods don’t depend on finding the right products, but our retailers’ livelihoods and businesses do, so it’s neat to have them pick the award-winning products,” Tratensek says. “It means a lot coming from independent retailers.”
