Steering Away From Distracted Driving

As vehicles have become safer and more technologically advanced, distracted driving has remained a major concern. More and more accidents are related to cell phone use, GPS distractions and texting while driving. As the National Safety Council reports, someone is injured in a car crash every 7 seconds and killed in one every 15 minutes.

It’s important to remember new technologies are not the only cause for distracted driving, though. For years, eating and drinking, grooming, reading maps and directions or adjusting a radio have contributed to accidents on the road.

The number of potential distractions can be worrisome for commercial fleet managers, and reasonably so. Distracted drivers are a danger to themselves, passengers and bystanders. Plus, if an employee driver ends up in an accident, the costs associated with that accident could be on your company and your insurance policy. Although good insurance coverage is critical in these instances, mitigating that risk exposure can be an important part of the equation, too.

Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company understands that preventing an accident is as important to hardware retailers as having the right coverage in place when one does occur. Our loss control team provides provides recommendations and resources, including sample fleet management policies and distracted driving policies.
