Study Shows Homeowners Want Bigger Closets

A recent study shows that more than half of people who renovate their master bedrooms also expand their closets.

Houzz, an online home improvement community, surveyed more than 1,500 people who completed a bedroom renovation or decorating project in the past 12 months, are currently working on a project or plan to start in the next three months.

Of the respondents who renovated their master bedrooms, 57 percent also upgraded their closets. Below is data from the study that shows the size changes these homeowners made to their master bedroom closets.

The study also shows that more than half of consumers who are enhancing their closets in the Midwest are increasing closet sizes by more than 50 percent.

Applied to Retail: Evaluate the products you stock that can help homeowners use their storage spaces more efficiently, even without adding more square footage. If you don’t offer full-closet organizational systems, you can still market big plastic tubs or even wall hooks to shoppers, keeping the closet upgrade trend in mind.

In the spring and the back-to-school seasons, create displays that show how your products can help homeowners or college students make better use of limited storage space. If you sell a variety of product options, consider building a model closet that exhibits different uses of your storage and organizational items.
