Uncovering the Latest Home Design Trends

New data from online home remodeling and design platform Houzz reveals the latest home design trends you can use to bolster sales in your paint, housewares and design departments.

By analyzing the frequency of certain search terms its audience of architects, designers and homeowners used in the second quarter and comparing those results to the same period one year ago, Houzz identified key trends independent home improvement retailers should know to capture sales.

Review some of the biggest design takeaways below.

Give Them Space

Houzz finds homeowners have been using their homes as new centers of activity and entertainment since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Searches for art studios grew by nearly 875 percent, while searches for home bars and wine cellars were up nearly four times as much as one year ago. Home gym and home office searches grew roughly double their frequency one year ago.

Bring the Outdoors In

Fresh, verdant green design trends are making their ways indoors, Houzz data shows. Searches for green kitchen cabinets grew by more than 800 percent compared to one year ago and searches for green tile bathrooms, green accent chairs and artificial plants all rose by roughly 700 percent.

Refresh the Living Room

Accessories for living rooms have seen some of the most dramatic increases in search patterns. Searches for accent pillows grew an astounding 5,050 percent compared to one year ago. Home accent searches grew more than 2,400 percent, indicating clear consumer interest in housewares and fresh designs.

Let There Be Luxury

Elements of luxury are having a sharp influence on how Houzz’s audience is decorating. Searches for gold table lamps and velvet accent chairs both rose more than 1,100 percent in the second quarter of the year. Customers are also curious regarding champagne color home decor, searching 800 percent more often than in the same period last year. Gold wall mirror searches grew more than 600 percent.
