Walmart Sees Sales Growth, Popularity of ‘Converged Experience’ in Q1

Walmart reported sales and revenue increases for its first quarter of 2018, with growth in its U.S., international and e-commerce segments.

U.S. sales were $77.7 billion during the quarter, an increase of 3.1 percent above the same time period in 2017, according to documents the company filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Walmart International had sales of $30.3 billion, for an increase of 11.7 percent, the filing says.

The company’s e-commerce sales increased 33 percent year over year, with a website redesign contributing to the growth, says Marc Lore, president and CEO of Walmart E-Commerce, in a phone press conference with reporters May 17.

Offering an increasingly “converged experience” to U.S. customers by expanding home delivery and buy-online, pickup-in-store options has gone well, says Greg Foran, president and CEO of Walmart U.S., in the press conference.

The new site has contributed to 10-20 percent more traffic going to Walmart’s online grocery business, Lore says.

“We know there is still a huge opportunity to do more for our customers, and we’ll continue to stay heads down on the fundamental e-commerce experience, while we play offense in our stores and innovate for the future,” Lore says.

The company has been actively growing its online business through acquisitions, most recently committing to buy Indian e-commerce company Flipkart for $16 billion on May 9.
